Heartworm Prevention and Flea Control Information

Here is a list of the different Heartworm Prevention and Flea Control products for dogs and what they do. I am only listing products that are FDA approved for Heartworm and Flea Control.

Heartworm Prevention

Interceptor (Milbemycin Oxime) 4 weeks and older. Pet must be at least 2 pounds
Protects against Heartworms, Hookworms, Roundworms and Whipworms

Heartgard Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) 6 weeks and older
Protects against Heartworms, Hookworms, and Roundworms

Iverheart Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) 6 weeks and older
Protects against Heartworms, Hookworms, and Roundworms

Tri-Heart Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel)6 weeks and older
Protects against Heartworms, Hookworms, and Roundworms

Iverheart Plus Max (ivermectin/pyrantel/praziquantel) 8 weeks and older
Protects against Heartworms, Hookworm, Roundworm, and Tapeworms

Iverheart and Tri-Heart are generic forms of Heartgard.

Combination Products (Heartworm and Flea)

Sentinel (Milbemycin oxime and Lufenuron) 4 weeks and older. Pet must be at least 2 pounds
A pill that protects against Heartworms, Hookworm, Roundworm and Whipworm

Sentinel is Interceptor (Heartworms) with Program (Fleas). The flea control (Lufenuron) is not an adulticide. It is an insect growth regulator. Lufenuron breaks the life cycle at both the egg and larval stages. It sterilizes the eggs. The adult flea still lives it's lifecycle on the dog.

Advantage MULTI for Dogs (Imidacloprid/Moxidectin) 7 weeks and older and 3 pounds or more
A topical flea control and heartworm prevention and is effective in the treatment of certain intestinal parasites including hookworms, roundworms and whipworms in dogs. But has NO Tick Control.

Revolution (Selamectin) 6 weeks and older
A topical flea control and heartworm prevention. Also protects/treats Ear mites, Canine sarcoptic mange, and the ONLY tick it will protect against is the American dog tick. There is other ticks that it does not protect against that also carry diseases that could be life threatening to your dog. And has no Intestinal Parasite protection listed on the label.

Trifexis (spinosad/milbemycin oxime) 8 weeks and older
A pill that kills fleas, prevents heartworm disease and treats and controls adult hookworm, roundworm and whipworm infections.

Trifexis is a combination of Interceptor (milbemycin oxime) for heartworms and Comfortis (spinosad) for fleas. The flea control Comfortis is a rapid kill. The fleas start dieing in 30 minutes and full kill in 4 hours. It is also a 1 bite and the Flea does. It has no tick control listed on the label. Also DO NOT USE WITH THE OFF LABEL USE OF IVERMECTIN.

Flea Control

Vectra 3D (Dinotefuran, Pyriproxyfen, Permethrin) 7 weeks and older
A Topical that repels and kills fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, lice, mites and sand flies.

Advantage II (Imidacloprid/Pyripoxyfen) 7 weeks and older
A topical solution for killing fleas. The new Advantage II is different from Advantage. Advantage just has Imidacloprid. Advantage II has Imidacloprid along with the insect growth regulator Pyripoxyfen

K9 Advantix II (Imidacloprid/Permethrin/Pyriproxyfen) 7 weeks and older
A topical solution that repels ticks, sand flies, mosquitoes and stable flies.

Frontline Topspot (Fipronil) 8 weeks and older
A topical solution for killing fleas and ticks.

Frontline Plus (Fipronil, S-methoprene) 8 weeks and older
A topical solution for killing fleas, ticks, and chewing lice infestations on dogs and cats and as an aid in control of sarcoptic mange infestations on dogs.

The difference between Frontline Top Spot and Frontline Plus is that Frontline Plus has the insect growth regulator S-methoprene. And Top Spot does not.

Pet Armour and Fiproguard are 2 of the generic form of Frontline available at the moment. There is a product patent issue going on. But is still available for now.

Comfortis (spinosad) 14 weeks and older
A pill that is a rapid kill. The fleas start dieing in 30 minutes and full kill in 4 hours. It is also a 1 bite and the Flea does. It has no tick control listed on the label. Also DO NOT USE WITH THE OFF LABEL USE OF IVERMECTIN.

PROGRAM (lufenuron) 4 weeks and older
A pill that prevents flea eggs and larvae from developing. It sterilizes the eggs. The adult flea still lives it's lifecycle on the dog.

Certifect (Fipronil/Amitraz)
A topical that protects against Fleas, 5 species of Ticks. This is Merial's new product.

Permethrin is toxic to cats. So products that have it as one of the main ingredients you can not use on cats. And have to take precaution when applying it to dogs that have interaction with cats.



Also wanted to add some flea products say they repel and kill Mosquitos. Do not confuse that with being protected from Heartworms. Just because it repels does not mean it prevents heartworm disease.
